5Windows Vista Ultimate - what a pleasant surprise!Apr 13, 2010
Let's start with the basics....

I have a Dell Precision 450, with dual 2.8 GHZ Xeons, and a Nvidia GeForce 6800 GS AGP card (256 MB).

I was running Windows Server 2003 on my box (until 2008), and had no problems, until I changed something in the Windows Registry which crippled the OS.

I then switched to Ubuntu Linux, and had no problems, running several progressive updates to that OS, until...

...I decided to see if Dell supported Windows 7 on my Precision. Unfortunately, Dell doesn't officially support Windows 7 on my Precision 450 (i.e. no driver support), so I decided to try Windows Vista. I had had a pretty good experience with Windows Home Premium (on my sister's Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop), so I figured, why not bite the bullet and see what happens?

I found this Windows Ultimate version for [...] bucks plus [...] and change for shipping and handling - talk about LUCKY, I guess!

I received it in the mail about 2 and 1/2 weeks ago, and immediately went with the install.

This OS installed quickly, and even installed iSCSI support (my Precision has two SCSI drives - 36.7 GB and 147 GB); it had no trouble identifying the drives. (Windows XP has SCSI support, IF you install the HD manufacturer's drivers at a certain point within setup.)

I've been playing with it ever since, and I must say, it's much more stable and responsive than I thought I would ever see in an OS outside of Mac OS X Tiger or Mac OS X Leopard! Apps open quickly - using web browsers and BOINC are a snap, as are using multimedia apps like GIMP or VLC or Winamp.

Even the footprint is not as large as I thought - my 36.7 GB SCSI boot drive took a 20 GB hit, but I thought that the install might not take (not knowing how much space the OS would take up, including all Service Packs and other updates).

Anyway, I must say, my reconnection and sojourn through 'The Dark Side' has actually been pleasant - what a surprise!

Update: 4/21/2010

I had to reinstall Windows Vista Ultimate, because, in uninstalling Roxio Creator 6 (using Revo Uninstaller), it somehow changed the sound settings, so that I had no sound, even though the driver and Intel AC 97 sound chip worked perfectly. The reinstallation worked perfectly, and, with all important updates and Service Packs (1 and 2) installed, my 36.7 GB SCSI boot drive now has just under 12 GB of free space left. Also, I followed the advice of another Amazon.com reviewer (for the Windows Vista Ultimate upgrade software) who strongly recommended that NOTHING other than the OS be installed on the boot drive. All my non-essential programs are installed and stored on my 147 GB SCSI drive.

Again, I will say that Windows Vista Ultimate is easy to use, and from what I can tell, the most reliable and quick OS I have encountered, other than Mac OS X Leopard. It is even somewhat intuitive, and how often can you say that about ANYTHING Microsoft puts out? I never thought that I would ever assign these attributes to a Microsoft OS, but I stand by my conclusions. If your older system doesn't quite have the manufacturer support (like mine) for Windows 7, or doesn't meet the minimum specs required for Windows 7, consider installing and running Windows Vista Ultimate!

UPDATE: 4/27/2010

I'd like to share a few more thoughts on this OS.

My Dell Precision 450's boot drive now has about 9 GB of free space remaining of 33.7 GB free space before install - about 26.7% - and is still running smoothly, without any hiccups. According to the Windows Update interface, there are only optional updates (language packs and Windows Vista Ultimate Extras); all important updates, including both Service Packs, have been installed.

The flavors of Windows Vista all include what I would term 'smart USB device driver/program updating', which means that when you plug in a digital camera, a USB pen drive, an external USB HD, a joystick, a webcam, or a microSDHC card via USB adapter, Vista automatically recognizes the device and installs the necessary drivers/programs needed for running the device. I have noticed that Vista is very responsive in this regard, starting this process within 5-7 seconds of attaching the device. (Windows XP also has this kind of service, but in many cases, you have to direct the Windows XP OS to where to find the proper drivers manually, and the service is not as responsive as that of Windows Vista.)

My best friend called me last week and asked me whether he should upgrade to Windows 7. Apparently, both he and I are some of the lucky few who have had no problems whatsoever with Windows Vista. I told him that it's not really necessary to upgrade right now, and to give Windows 7 some lead time for Microsoft to iron the bugs out, say, 6 to 12 months. He agreed with me, though - we both find Windows Vista to be a very good OS, no matter what flavor you are running.

5Do not but this product or anything else from seller "Blank22"Mar 10, 2010
3-10-10 This seller has like a zillion 5 star ratings and says customer service is their highest priority...NOT!!! I ordered Windows Vista Ultimate in February 16th, 2010 and I have sent three emails to this seller that went un-answered. The delivery estimate was from Feb 23rd thru March 10th. Well I have nothing and amazon told me I have to wait until Mar 13th to file a claim. I mean do we really need to wait almost a month to get our money back amazon??? I knew after the first two weeks I was duped. If I have to wait this long for a product then it's not worth it and sellers can just post items they don't have and get away with thousands of dollars. (shame on you amazon!!!!!). I'm taking my business elsewhere :(

5Rock salledDec 27, 2009
I had Vista Ultimate 64 bit for three years now, sense serv. pk 2 it is aloght faster. With XP i would have reinstalled it 3 times
in that time, Because it would start slowing down and the blue screen of death. With vista it would just keep getting bitter as time goese on.

4Working well for 2+ yearsDec 08, 2009
I have been using this Windows version for over 2+ years with no major problems. Every system will have an occasional issue but most times it is the user who makes it worse or has too many conflicting add-on programs installed (known or unknown).
