If only there were a zero star option!Aug 31, 2010 I bought this software with a new Mac Book Pro and paid full price. First let me say that I am not a fan of the manufacturer. When I was using PC's I found that the native Windows speech recognition in both Vista and Windows 7 was much better than Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred v. 10.
But the Mac Version (1.5.9 which is current as of today, 8/30/2010) is so bad that it I consider it fraudulent for them to even sell it at any price. I did not have the disk or installation problems that many people describe. The problem I have is that is is not nearly as accurate as native window speech recognition or the windows version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking. On top of that, when you tell it to correct a word, all is fine until you open the "Recognition Window" to make a correction. At that point you are screwed because the word that you wanted to correct is no longer selected. Instead, that word and various partial words surrounding the word you want to correct are now selected. Worse, the selection in the "Recognition Window" is not the word you want to correct or the words that are now selected on your screen. On top of all that, there simply is no support, period, end of story.
All of this would be one thing if this were an iPhone app being sold for $2.99. But this product has a top of the line list price of $199.00.
Please, I beg you, save your money. It is no surprise to me that Dragon does not put its name on this product. It is an absolute, out and out fraud.
More expensive than Dragon Naturally Speaking and fewer featuresAug 26, 2010 Macspeech dictate works reasonably well with comprehension in the upper 90%s. What bothers me about this product is its lack of feature parity compared to Dragon NaturallySpeaking for the PC even though they are based on the same recognition engine. NaturallySpeaking features a dramatically improved set of tools for editing and training. For example, you can select text that has been misrecognized and then right-click to "Correct that." This brings up a menu of different possibilities from which to choose. You can also select a group of words and select "Play that back" to listen to the corresponding audio.
Another feature lacking in Macspeech dictate is the ability to transcribe an audio file. I know this is available on Macspeech Scribe, but it is disappointing that a more expensive product for the Mac does not have many useful features available on the PC version.
Pros: speech recognition is decent
Cons: training and editing functions are sorely lacking compared to PC version. No transcribing of audio files which is available on PC version.
Dictate with great easeAug 21, 2010
This product makes life very easy for those of us who miss an assistant . It is neat and compact. However it does need a lot of practice and training. I am hopeful that I will get over this limitation very soon. Ramu Ramdas

Flawed editing mars decent speech recognitionAug 20, 2010 Count me among those dissatisfied with MacSpeech Dictate. As a screenwriter who prefers Macs (some of the best tools are Mac only), I have tried for months to make Dictate play nice with various screenwriting programs, including Final Draft 8, Scrivener, Storyist, and Screenwriter. While the actual word recognition is decent, random formatting errors and poor editing make the program nearly unusable. I literally spend more than half my time not writing but erasing extraneous leading spaces and trailing letters, capitilizing the first word of sentences (why are these in lowercase?), and repairing mangled lines of text. God help you if you ever have to correct the darn thing. Add to these frustrations Dicate's occasional periods of complete unresponsiveness (a petit mal seizure, perhaps?) and random crashes.
Because of these debilitating shortcomings, I have had to spend literally hundreds of dollars purchasing Parallels 5, Windows 7, and Dragon Naturallyspeaking 11 just so I can continue to work.
And yes, all my software is new and update to date. My computer is an iMac 3.06 Mhz with duo core and 4 GB of RAM. My microphone is a Revolabs Xtag.
This flawed product marries Dragon's decent speech recognition engine to a poorly conceived and executed text editor that has nothing to do with Nuance's far superior product, which handles these things effortlessly, regardless of your input device (mouse or keyboard).
Please, MacSpeech, kill this dog, go back to the drawing board, and release a product that actually works.
Works but...Aug 18, 2010 Is the most buggy and quite possibly the worst piece of software I have ever used. Don't waste your time until it is improved. As of summer 2010, I highly recommend against buying this product.
